David Blackwell served as emeritus professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught starting in 1954. Berkeley. He received his AB (1938), AM (1939), and PhD (1941) in Statistics from the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of California, Berkeley, Blackwell served as a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study (1941) and Chair of the Dept. of Mathematics at Howard University (1944-1954). He has served as President of the American Statistical Society and Vice President of the America Mathematics Society, and was also the first African American inducted into the National Academy of Sciences. In 1979, Blackwell won the von Neumann Theory Prize from the Operations Research Society of America.
